Job Description:
This employee is responsible for organizing and implementing a therapy program to
meet the needs of speech, language and deaf and hard of hearing students under the
guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- Planning
- Designing therapy services under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist so that they are consistent with the total educational philosophy of the district.
- Following a professional implementation plan that is developed jointly with the supervising speech/language pathologist and monitored by the program supervisor.
- Working in coordination with Special Education teachers in planning and developing services.
- Cooperating with school personnel in coordinating Special Education services within that school.
- Programing
- Conducting grade-wide speech/language and hearing screenings once a year.
- Participating in the in-school staffing processes as appropriate.
- Providing speech/language and/or hearing screening tests for all students referred by the in-school staffing committee.
- Providing diagnostic/evaluation testing for students failing speech/language screenings under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
- Participating on evaluation teams for speech, language, deaf and hard of hearing and other students as appropriate under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech language pathologist.
- Preparing educational plans annually for each student based on individually assessed needs in accordance with district procedures and under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
- Preparing and implementing therapy plans for each student under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
- Providing appropriate schedules for exceptional students involving school personnel as required.
- Seeking a variety of services through community resources and agencies to meet the needs of exceptional students.
- Conferring with the classroom teacher concerning any educational needs of the student.
- Making available to teachers instructional ideas that are appropriate for exceptional students within the classroom situation.
- Referring those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
- Public Relations
- Sharing information with classroom teachers regarding the goals and objectives of the Special Education program and ways of achieving them in the school setting.
- Providing information to community groups and parents concerning Special Education programs as requested or needed under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
- Working to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
- Reporting
- Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records and related service documents in his/her permanent folder.
- Furnishing the principal with current exceptional student schedules.
- Documenting and maintaining records on student progress.
- Maintaining therapy attendance records.
- Attending and participating in faculty meetings or other meetings as required.
- Other Responsibilities
- Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, observational feedback and conferences, visiting related facilities, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas among the district staff.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in speech/language pathology or communication disorders.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in a similar position.
- Ability to use sign language.
- Experience with augmentative communication.
