Super Monday Message
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Since the holiday doesn't fall on a Monday most years I thought this would be a good time to give a little motivational history of the holiday. St. Patrick is, of course, a person, and a person with a neat story.
St. Patrick, now known as the patron saint of Ireland, is one of the most celebrated figures in Catholic history. Though widely associated with Ireland, Patrick was actually born in Britain around 385 AD. His real name was Maewyn Succat, not very memorable, and as a child he was far from being called a saint. At the age of 16, he claimed he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave. He said he spent six years in captivity, working as a shepherd, where he turned to faith for strength and guidance.
The story goes that one night Patrick had a vision that urged him to escape. He fled and made his way back to Britain and reunited with his family. However, his experience in Ireland had changed him. He believed God called him to return to Ireland as a missionary to help the people that had enslaved him. He spent years studying Christianity and was ordained as a priest before returning to Ireland to spread the Christian faith.
Patrick’s mission was not easy. He faced resistance from local religious leaders, but he remained determined. He tried to use familiar symbols and teachings to connect with the Irish people. His most famous symbol was the shamrock, which he used to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Over time, he gained the respect of the Irish people and converted many to Christianity, even persuading kings and leaders to adopt the faith. His efforts led to the establishment of churches, schools, and monasteries throughout Ireland.
St. Patrick’s impact obviously extended far beyond his lifetime. He still plays a crucial role in shaping Irish culture and identity. Because of his influence, Ireland became a major center of Christian learning during the Middle Ages, preserving knowledge and religious teachings that would later benefit the rest of Europe. His story of perseverance, faith, and forgiveness continues to inspire people around the world.
St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated every March 17, is not only a religious observance but also a cultural celebration of Irish heritage. Today, the holiday has grown well beyond Ireland. St. Patrick’s life teaches us that hardship can be transformed into purpose. His story remains a timeless example of how perseverance, forgiveness, and belief in a greater purpose can shape the world for the better. Have a happy holiday and the best Week 30.
